Beagles fell into people's good graces for their wonderful ability of tracing and retrieving small game (rabbits, hares, quails etc.). People of all life styles had a soft spot in their hearts for Beagles because of their miniature size and easy-going temper. These little things were irreplaceable hunting companions, and they often hunted in small packs.

Early representatives of the breed were smaller than their modern descendants are, but small species do occur in litters so far. Hunters used to carry dogs to the hunting field in the pockets of their hunting clothes and saddlebags. The size has grown over the years, and modern Beagles can reach 16 inches high. Beagle types arrived in America during colonial times, but it was not until the last decade of the 19th century that English Beagles established themselves on the American continent.
