From the time it appeared in the United States, the breed became very popular due to its outstanding temperament and working qualities. These dogs are used now for hunting, obedience, agility, narcotics detection, and make good pets. The original purpose of the breed was hunting in packs, so these dogs strive for a companionship and cannot be left alone for a long time. If they don’t have a task to do, they will find a way to amuse themselves that means causing trouble and destruction.

Though the exact origin of the breed is unknown, it has definitely been around people for a few centuries. The breed was probably called so after the word “begele,” which means “small.” Another version claims that these dogs are named so because of the French word "begle" meaning "useless or of little value." Generally, this is one of the oldest breeds. Similar-looking dogs are described in documents dating back to 400 B.C. These small hounds became popular with the British monarchy in the 1300 and 1400's, because hunters could follow them on foot.
