There are many ideas as to what the exact origin of the breed is. These hounds might have existed in Britain before Roman times. Excellent hunters and trackers then, they preserve their hunting instincts nowadays, and are often used to their primary purpose. Without enough exercise and proper training, the hound’s uncontrolled active and energetic nature will lead to messy behavior. Being natural hunters, these dogs are very vocal and it takes time and efforts to train it out of them. Pets of this breed usually adore children and are happy to run and play for hours.

These dogs have an appearance of hardy, squarely built hounds. They are considered one of the smallest of the hunting hounds. Compact and athletic, they have short weather resistant coats. Their typical physical features are the long skull, low set, moderately long, droop ears, large eyes, a muscular body, and curved tail. Their short coat is easy to groom. It may come in red and white, orange and white, or lemon and white hues. The muzzle of the dog is straight and square. The nose is black. The pendant ears are long. The eyes are brown or hazel.
