Lemon Beagle

A lemon Beagle has a rare coat color. It’s very pale brown with a reddish tinge. Lemon Beagles are not a variety within the breed, but a genetic trait in some bloodlines. Such unusual coat color is determined by a recessive gene. If both parents have this gene, the offspring would be lemon; if one of the parents has it, only some of the puppies can be lemon. The most common coat colors and patterns in Beagles are bicolor (black and tan, red and white, lemon and white, or orange and white) and tricolor (black, tan and white.) Ticking often occurs in this breed. The tip of the tail and the feet should be white in Beagles, to make them easy to follow for a hunter.

A lemon Beagle should not cost more than Beagles with more common coat colors, because the color is of little importance in this breed. Temperament and working abilities are far more important for real breed fanciers. It’s absolutely wrong to choose a pet by its coat color, size or other characteristics. Dog ownership is a long-term commitment and the only right way to choose a suited companion for your family is learning about the personality and habits of your future pet. Beagles can adapt to various conditions, but all of them need much exercise and mental stimulation. Otherwise, a lively and curious animal will become neurotic, disobedient, and manipulative.

In spite of a short, sleek coat, a lemon Beagle sheds considerably, which can make a nuisance for fastidious housekeepers. Regular grooming and bathing helps minimize the amount of shed hair. Keeping a Beagle outdoors in the kennel is cruel, because these dogs are very people-oriented. They need to be around people at least in the evening. A Beagle kept in a kennel and not allowed indoors suffers from separation anxiety and boredom. Like all hounds, Beagles are not intended for guarding the property, so there is no practical need in a Beagle dog kept in a kennel.

Since Beagles were bred for hunting with their noses, they like to investigate everything new and meet new people and pets. It’s very important to give a Beagle obedience lessons, but even a well-trained Beagle is not always reliable. You can never know when your lemon Beagle becomes attracted by a smell and starts following it.
