Miniature Beagle
The Miniature Beagle is a variety of the breed originated from the standard Beagle. Actually, the smaller version of the Beagle is older than the full-sized dogs of today, but miniature or Pocket and Glove Beagles lost their popularity and became extinct in the 19th century. Miniature Beagles were popular among the nobility, especially ladies who could participate in hunts by following these dogs on foot. The modern mini variety of the breed was created by breeding down standard dogs. Nowadays, the Miniature Beagle has no official recognition and cannot compete with standard dogs in various dog sports.
When searching for a Miniature Beagle, keep in mind, that the pet market is full of poorly bred undersized puppies produced for profit. It may be difficult to find a breeder who produces true Miniature Beagles using ethical methods. Since the miniature variety is not recognized, breed clubs cannot provide breeder references. The only ways to buy a healthy true Miniature Beagle are talking to happy owners of these dogs or surfing the Internet and finding a kennel in your area.
Lack of official recognition means nothing for breed fanciers who appreciate the breed’s friendly personality and inquisitive nature. Little tail-waggers bring joy to people’s lives and need minimal care. They are well-suited for families with children and for the elderly. If the owner is not experienced enough to train and socialize a puppy, buying an adult or senior Miniature Beagle would be a good way out to obtain a well-behaved pet.
The Miniature Beagle is generally a very hardy and long-lived dog. The average lifespan in this breed is 12-15 years. Though some bloodlines are prone to genetic disorders, Miniature Beagles bought from reputable breeders are healthy and full of life. Even in their teens, these dogs need much exercise for their mind and body. Long daily walks in the park are the favorite pastime for any Beagle. Indoor living is not recommended for these active and inquisitive creatures, but they enjoy being around the family. The ideal living conditions for the Miniature Beagle would be spending the night indoor with the family and playing in the yard in the daytime.
